Does Your Device Decode AV1? A 2026 Reality Check

AV1 has quietly stopped being a next-generation codec and started being a normal one. Netflix serves roughly 30% of its streams as AV1. YouTube is over 75%. AV1 and HEVC together now cover 99.73% of decode sessions.

The reason is straightforward: AV1 streaming sessions use about a third less bandwidth than AVC or HEVC while scoring higher on quality metrics. Less data, better picture. Everyone with a bandwidth bill wants that.

The catch is on your end. A device either has a hardware AV1 decoder or it doesn't, and if it doesn't, decoding falls to the CPU. On a phone or a TV stick that means heat, battery drain, and stutter — which people almost always blame on their player or their connection.

The honest framing: Tuneline is a media player for content you provide. It does not implement its own video decoder — it uses your platform's (libmpv, ExoPlayer, VideoToolbox), which means AV1 support is your device's, not any player's. No player can add a decoder your hardware lacks.

Hardware vs Software Decoding, Briefly

Every codec can be decoded two ways:

  • Hardware — a dedicated block on the chip does it. Fast, cool, barely touches the battery.
  • Software — the general-purpose CPU does it. Works on anything, costs a lot of power.

For H.264 this rarely matters; the format is old and cheap to decode. AV1 is computationally expensive, so the gap is dramatic. A device that hardware-decodes AV1 4K stays cool. The same device in software may not manage it at all.

Which Devices Have It

The rough dividing line is 2023. Netflix reports that 88% of large-screen devices submitted for certification between 2021 and 2025 support AV1, and effectively everything since 2023 does 4K60.

Apple — hardware AV1 arrived with the M3 and the A17 Pro (iPhone 15 Pro) in 2023. Earlier Apple silicon, including M1 and M2, has no AV1 decoder. An M1 MacBook is a fast machine that decodes AV1 in software.

Android phones — flagship chips from 2022-2023 onwards generally have it (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and later, recent Tensor, recent Dimensity). Mid-range and budget devices frequently do not, including new ones.

PC GPUs — Nvidia RTX 30-series and later, AMD RX 6000 and later, Intel Arc and 11th-gen-or-later integrated graphics.

TVs and streaming devices — most TVs shipping now include it. Older streaming sticks frequently don't, and this is where people get caught, because a stick bought in 2021 still feels fine on everything else.

How to Check Yours

Android — install a codec-info app (DevCheck, AIDA64) and look for c2. or OMX entries mentioning av01. An entry with .decoder.av1 that is not prefixed c2.android. (the software decoder) means hardware support.

Windows — Device Manager tells you nothing useful here. Check your GPU model against the list above. The Microsoft Store also offers an "AV1 Video Extension" — note that installing it adds software support, not hardware.

Mac — M3 or later, or A17 Pro or later on iPhone. M1 and M2 do not have it.

Any device, empirically — play a known AV1 file and watch the temperature and battery. Hardware decode: cool, minimal drain. Software: hot, fans, battery visibly falling. This is the most reliable test available to most people.

What to Do If You Don't Have It

Verify hardware decoding is actually enabled. Before concluding anything, check that your player isn't set to software decoding for an unrelated reason. Plenty of "my device can't handle this" turns out to be a setting.

Prefer a lower resolution. AV1 1080p in software is often fine where 4K isn't. If the source offers variants, dropping down is the cheapest fix.

Use a different source stream where one exists. Many services offer H.264 or HEVC alongside AV1. Older devices are usually served the older codec automatically — the problem tends to arise when a device is new enough to be offered AV1 but lacks the decoder.

Move playback to a device that has it. Casting from a phone to a TV that decodes AV1 puts the work on the right chip. (Casting guide.)

Accept it for now. If your device predates 2023 and works for everything else, this is a narrow limitation, not a reason to replace it.

Buying in 2026

If you're buying anything that plays video, hardware AV1 decode is now a checklist item. Not because you'll notice it today, but because the share of AV1 traffic only goes one direction, and a device without it ages badly and specifically.

Why "My Player Doesn't Support AV1" Is Usually the Wrong Diagnosis

Worth stating plainly, because it's a common misattribution.

Media players almost universally hand decoding to the platform — libmpv, ExoPlayer, VideoToolbox, or the OS media stack. They ask the system to decode a stream; the system uses hardware if it has it and software if it doesn't.

So a player cannot add hardware AV1 support to a device that lacks it. What a player can do is choose whether to attempt hardware decoding, expose that as a setting, and report honestly when it falls back. Switching players will not give an M1 Mac an AV1 decoder.

If AV1 stutters on your device, the useful questions are "does this chip have the decoder" and "is hardware decoding switched on" — in that order. (Codec landscape.)

Does my device support AV1?

For bandwidth, yes — roughly a third less data at slightly better measured quality. Hardware support is younger, which is the whole trade-off.
