The Best Streaming Device in 2026: Power, Reliability and How Long It'll Last
Almost every streaming-device roundup compares the same thing: which apps are on it. That comparison stopped being useful years ago, because the big services are on everything.
What actually separates a box you are happy with in 2029 from one you replace next year is less glamorous: what it can decode, how much RAM it has, whether it has an Ethernet port, and how long the manufacturer keeps updating it. Those four things decide whether a stream plays smoothly, whether the interface stays responsive after a year of app updates, and whether you are shopping again in eighteen months.
Here is that comparison, honestly.
The Four Things That Actually Matter
1. Decode support
A streaming box does not "play video" in general — it plays the specific formats its chip can decode in hardware. Anything outside that list either falls back to software decoding (stuttering, hot device, drained battery on portable hardware) or does not play at all.
In 2026 the practical list is H.264, HEVC/H.265, VP9 and AV1. The first three are table stakes. AV1 is the one that separates current hardware from old hardware, and it matters increasingly: AV1 now carries roughly 30% of Netflix streams and over 75% of YouTube's. 2. RAM
The single most under-reported spec, and the one most responsible for "it got slow". Interfaces get heavier with every app update; the hardware does not. A 1.5 GB box that felt fine at launch is a box that reboots when you switch apps two years later.
2 GB is the floor in 2026. 3 GB or more is what ages well.
3. Ethernet
Wi-Fi is fine until it is not, and a live stream is the least forgiving thing on your network — it cannot buffer ahead the way an on-demand service can, so a two-second dropout is a two-second freeze.
A box with an Ethernet port, or one that supports an Ethernet adapter, removes an entire class of problem permanently. Sticks generally do not have one. (Whether Ethernet actually helps in your situation.)
4. Update longevity
The quiet one. A box that stops receiving OS updates stops receiving app updates soon after, because apps raise their minimum platform version. This is how a perfectly functional piece of hardware becomes unusable without anything physically failing.
Track records vary enormously here, and past behaviour from a manufacturer is the only signal you have.

Nothing here is a paid placement. I have not tested every unit at length, and prices move constantly, so treat the positioning as the point rather than the specifics.

The Thing Roundups Skip: Can You Install What You Want?
2026 made this a real differentiator for the first time.
Amazon moved new Fire TV Stick hardware to Vega OS, which has no sideloading capability at all — no unknown-sources toggle, no ADB, no downloader app. The Fire TV Stick HD and 4K Select are affected; the 4K Plus and 4K Max are not. All future sticks will be. (Which models, in detail.)
Separately, Google's developer verification requirement begins September 30, 2026 in four countries and goes global in 2027. That one verifies the developer of an app rather than restricting you, so apps from accountable developers keep installing normally — but anonymous APKs stop. (What that actually changes.)
Net effect on a buying decision: Android TV and Google TV are now the mainstream platforms where installing your own software remains normal. Apple TV and Roku never allowed it. New Fire sticks no longer do.
If you exclusively use big-name apps, none of this affects you and you should buy on interface and price. If you use anything outside the major services, it is the most important line in the table.
Smart TV Apps vs a Separate Box
A recurring question, and the answer has not changed: a separate box is better, and the gap widens over time.
The built-in apps on a TV run on the cheapest silicon in the device, get software support for a fraction of the panel's life, and increasingly serve as an advertising and data-collection surface. Content-recognition tracking is standard across brands, and the opt-outs are buried several menus deep. (How to turn that off on your set.)
A good panel outlives its own software by years. Buying the panel for the picture and a separate box for the software is the setup that stays good.
Which One I'd Actually Buy
- Best overall, cost no object: Google TV Streamer or NVIDIA Shield TV Pro. Ethernet, headroom, open platform, long support.
- Best value: Walmart onn 4K Pro. It does the important things and costs a fraction of the alternatives.
- Best if you live in Apple's world: Apple TV 4K — but check the rumoured late-2026 refresh before buying at full price.
- Cheapest that still sideloads: Fire TV Stick 4K Max, while it is still on shelves.
- Simplest for someone who will never tinker: Roku, accepting the advertising.
And a note nobody puts in these lists: the box matters less than your network. A £50 box on Ethernet beats a £200 box on marginal Wi-Fi, every time, for live content. If your streams stutter today, fix the network before you buy hardware. (Why buffering happens and what fixes it.)
