Windows 10 End of Support and Your Media Player (2026)

Windows 10 reached its official end of mainstream support in October 2025, and the Extended Security Update programme now carries security patches through to 12 October 2027.

If you use a Windows 10 machine to watch things — an old laptop plugged into the TV, a desktop that plays streams while you work, a little box under the television — the practical question is not "is Windows 10 dead". It is "when does my software stop working, and what do I do then?"

The answer is more relaxed than the headlines suggest, and there is one deadline worth putting in your calendar.

What Actually Changes, and When

Nothing has stopped working. Windows 10 boots, plays video, and connects to the internet exactly as before. End of support means Microsoft stops adding features and, eventually, stops issuing security patches. It is not a kill switch.

The timeline that matters:

That last row is the one that actually affects you, and it is the one nobody announces in advance.

How Apps Actually Leave You Behind

Software does not stop working the day an OS goes out of support. It decays, in a specific and predictable order:

  1. New versions require Windows 11. Your installed copy keeps working; updates stop arriving.
  2. Browsers freeze. Browser vendors set their own cut-offs, and a frozen browser is the biggest practical security exposure on an unpatched machine — it is the thing touching hostile content all day.

  4. Newer codecs arrive late or not at all. Format support increasingly comes through OS-level components and driver updates. Step 3 is the one specific to media playback, and it is why "it still boots" is not the same as "it still plays".

Your Realistic Options

Option 1: Stay on Windows 10 until October 2027

Entirely reasonable, if the machine is not doing anything sensitive. You have over a year of security updates. Keep the browser current while you can, do not use the machine for banking, and revisit in 2027.

Best for: a dedicated media PC that mostly plays video and does little else.

Option 2: Upgrade to Windows 11

Free if your hardware qualifies. The requirements — TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a supported CPU generation — are what exclude a lot of otherwise-fine machines.

Check yours: Microsoft's PC Health Check tool gives a definitive answer, and often the blocker is TPM being disabled in firmware rather than absent. That is a BIOS toggle, not a purchase.

Best for: anything that passes the check. If you qualify, take it.

Option 3: Move to Linux

The best-value option for older hardware, and it has become genuinely approachable. A modern desktop Linux distribution runs comfortably on hardware Windows 11 refuses, gets security updates indefinitely, and plays video well.

For a media machine specifically, this is a stronger option than its reputation suggests: playback on Linux is in a good place in 2026, hardware decoding works on mainstream graphics, and the software you want is a package install away. (The state of Linux video playback in 2026.)

Best for: an older PC whose only job is media, where you are willing to spend an afternoon on setup.

Option 4: Replace the PC with a streaming box

The honest option nobody suggests, because it is not a Windows answer.

If that Windows 10 laptop exists purely to put video on a television, a modern streaming box does that job better: instant on, silent, remote-friendly, no fan, and a fraction of the power draw. A whole desktop operating system is a lot of machinery for playing video. (What to look for in a box.)

Best for: anyone whose "media PC" is really a set-top box wearing a costume.

Making Windows 10 Play Well in the Meantime

If you are staying put, a few things genuinely help — none of which require a new OS.

Keep graphics drivers current while updates last. Fetch them from the GPU vendor rather than Windows Update, which lags. Decode performance lives here.

Prefer lighter software. A player that leans on hardware decoding and does not carry a heavy interface will feel dramatically better on ageing hardware than one that does not. (What actually makes playback fast on weak hardware.)

Use Ethernet. Old laptops often have old, weak Wi-Fi radios. A cable removes an entire class of stutter, and live streams are the least forgiving thing on a network. (Ethernet vs Wi-Fi, honestly.)

Turn off what you do not need. Startup programs, background sync, indexing. On a machine with 4 GB of RAM this is the difference between smooth and not.

Keep your setup portable. This is the important one. If your playlists and preferences live only on that PC, then the day you change anything — new OS, new machine, dead drive — you start over. If they live in an account, migration is a login. (How to back up playlists and favourites.)

The Security Part, Briefly

After October 2027, an unpatched Windows 10 machine on the internet is a risk that grows over time. Not dramatically overnight, but steadily.

Sensible mitigations if you keep one running:

  • Do not use it for banking, shopping or email.
  • Keep it on a guest network if your router supports one, so it cannot see the rest of your devices.
  • Do not install software from unknown sources on it.
  • Treat it as an appliance for playing video, not as a general-purpose computer.

That is a perfectly workable posture for a media machine. It is not a workable posture for your main PC.
