EPG Not Working on TiVimate or Firestick? Here's the Fix

A blank program guide is one of the most frustrating failures in this whole category, because everything looks right. Your sources load. They play. The guide is just empty, or half-populated, or showing yesterday.

The good news: it's almost never the app. TiVimate is a well-built player and a Firestick is perfectly capable of displaying a guide. The failure is nearly always in the data or the match between two files.

Work through these in order. Each step isolates one cause.

The honest framing: Tuneline is a media player for content you provide. Nothing here is a reason to switch apps — this is a data problem, and it follows you between players until it's fixed.

Step 1: Have You Actually Added a Guide Source?

Obvious, and still the number one cause.

Your playlist and your guide are two separate things. Adding a playlist does not add schedule data. Some providers bundle a guide URL with the playlist; many don't, and some quietly stop.

Step 2: The ID Mismatch (The Big One)

If a guide source is configured and still nothing shows, this is overwhelmingly the reason.

The guide joins to your playlist on an identifier:

• The M3U carries tvg-id="something" on each entry.
• The XMLTV carries <channel id="something">.

They must match exactly — same spelling, same case, same punctuation. When they don't, the guide loads thousands of programmes that describe none of your entries, and you get a blank grid.

How to confirm it in two minutes:

1. Open your playlist in a text editor and note a tvg-id value from an entry that has no guide.
2. Download the guide file, decompress if it's .gz, and search for that exact string.
3. Not there? The guide doesn't cover your list. Nothing in the app will fix it.

The usual root cause is a regional mismatch — a UK guide against a US playlist, for example. It's not broken, it's just describing different things.

Step 3: Wrong Times Is a Different Problem

If the guide is populated but everything is offset by a few hours, stop — you don't have a missing-data problem at all. You have a timezone problem, and the fixes above are irrelevant.

XMLTV timestamps carry a UTC offset. If the file omits it, or your device's timezone is wrong, everything shifts uniformly. The tell is that the offset is consistent across every entry. (Timezone fix.)

Step 4: The Guide URL Has Expired

Free guide sources move, rename, and disappear regularly. A URL that worked last month may now return a 404 or a login page.

Test it outside the app — paste it into a browser on your phone or computer:

• A file downloads → the URL is alive. Move on.
• A 404 or error page → dead. Find a new source.
• An HTML page → the server is returning an error page that your app is dutifully saving as "the guide". This is why some apps report "loaded" and still show nothing.

Step 5: Firestick-Specific Storage Limits

This one is specific to Fire TV hardware and catches people badly.

Guide files are large. A full national guide can be hundreds of megabytes uncompressed. A Firestick has very little usable storage, and when it fills:

• The guide download fails silently or truncates.
• You get a partial guide — some entries populated, some not, apparently at random.
• The app may become sluggish or crash on the guide screen.

To check and fix:

1. Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage. Under about 1 GB free is trouble.
2. Clear the app's cache (not data — data holds your sources).
3. Uninstall anything you don't use. Fire TV devices ship fuller than you'd think.
4. Reduce the guide load: use a source with a shorter date range (2-3 days instead of 14) or a trimmed file covering only your sources.

A partial guide that fills in differently each restart is nearly always this.

Step 6: It Just Hasn't Finished

Guide files are big and TV boxes are slow. On first load, a large guide can take several minutes to download and parse — and many apps show an empty grid the whole time rather than a progress indicator.

Give it five minutes on a fresh setup before concluding anything. If your app has a manual refresh guide action, use it and wait rather than restarting repeatedly.

Step 7: A Malformed Guide File

Less common, but it produces the most baffling symptom: the file downloads fine and still yields nothing.

• Unescaped & in a title makes the XML invalid. Strict parsers abort the entire file over one bad character.
• The file is HTML, not XML. First line <!DOCTYPE html> means you downloaded an error page.
• Programmes reference undeclared channels and get silently dropped.

If you can, open the file and check the first line, then search for a bare & not followed by amp;.

The Order That Saves Time

Does Switching Apps Help?

Honestly: usually not, and it's worth saying plainly.

If the cause is an ID mismatch, an expired URL, or a Firestick that's out of space, the problem follows you to any player, because it's in the data and the hardware, not the app.

Where a different player genuinely helps is narrower:

• It handles large guide files more efficiently on constrained hardware.
• It offers manual mapping when IDs don't match.
• It reports what failed instead of showing a blank grid.

That last one matters more than it sounds. A player that says "guide downloaded, 0 of 1,842 entries matched your sources" saves you every step above.

Why is my EPG not working on TiVimate?

Most often the tvg-id values in your playlist don't match the <channel id> values in your guide file, so there's nothing to join. Check by searching the guide file for one of your IDs.

Why does my Firestick guide only partly fill in?

Usually storage. Guide files are large, Fire TV devices have little free space, and a truncated download populates some entries and not others.
